Recently realized projects of the Workcenter

Oct-Nov 1999: Pontedera, Italy – Presentations of Action at the Workcenter. Witnesses are artists, theatre practitioners and scholars from several countries (Italy, France, UK, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Greece, Turkey, US, Canada, Argentina, Colombia, Singapore) ; at the end of this cycle of presentations, a day of meeting between the witnesses and Thomas Richards and Mario Biagini.

Apr 2000: Italy – Presentations of One breath left : Pontedera, “Fondazione Pontedera Teatro” ; Bologna – “Casa delle Culture e dei Teatri” ; Pontedera – International Theatre Festival “Generazioni 2000”.

May 2000: Caen/France – Centre Dramatique National de Normandie – This project lasted 22 days and included 10 presentations of the opus Action, one seminar with witnesses of Action, and a conference of Thomas Richards at the University of Caen around his book At Work with Grotowski on Physical Actions.
un 2000: Italy – Releasing the Italian translation of The Edge-Point of Performance by Thomas Richards, published in the Documentation Series of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski by “Fondazione Pontedera Teatro”.

Jun-Jul 2000: Singapore – Presentations of One breath left, “Chinese Heritage Center”, Nanyang Technology University.

Jul 2000: Pontedera/Italy - Students from the Fordham University, N.Y. USA, and theatre directors from the USA (participating in the International Symposium for Directors held by La MaMa Umbria International, Spoleto, Italy) saw the opus Action. The project included a 5 hours seminar in Orvieto, Italy. The Fordham students, exclusively, also participated in a 6 days working session at the Workcenter.

Jun-Aug 2000: A professional film team from Belgium records the opus Action, under the leadership of Thomas Richards.

Sept-Nov 2000: Pontedera, Italy – For the first time at the Workcenter, invited observers have the opportunity to see during the same evening Action, and then One breath left.

Oct 2000: Pontedera, Italy – The scientific research group “Spectacle Vivant et Sciences de l'Homme” of the “Maison des Sciences de l'Homme”, Paris, France, with professors of theatre history, anthropologists and psychiatrists from the Universities of Paris, (Paris VIII and EHEES) Wien, Rome, Bologna and Peruse, visits the Workcenter to witness Action, see Project The Bridge and meet with the Workcenter team. Bologna, Italy: Presentations of One breath left, “Casa delle Culture e dei Teatri”. Pontedera, Italy – Exchange of work between the Workcenter and the “U Theatre” from Taiwan : presentations of Action and One breath left, meeting/discussion between the two teams.

Dec 2000: Rome, Italy – Cycle of lectures by Mario Biagini at the University La Sapienza, on “Theatre Roads: Composition and Living Process”.

Apr 2001: Presentation at the “ Fondazione Pontedera Teatro ”, of the new version of One breath left. Caen, France – Projection of the documentary film A film documentation of ACTION, organized by “ A.C.C.A.A.N. - Atelier Cinéma de Normandie” and the “Centre Dramatique National de Normandie”.

May 2001: Moscow, Russia – One month residency of the Workcenter team in the “School of Dramatic Art” Theatre of Anatoli Vasiliev, during the “Forum on Theatre Education and Experiment ” in the frame of the “III International Theatre Olympics”: presentations during the same evening of Action and then One breath left, meetings with the witnesses of Action and the spectators of One breath left, public projection of the documentary film A film documentation of ACTION, followed by a meeting/discussion.

Jun 2001: Pontedera, Italy – During the International Theatre Festival “Generazioni 2001”, presentations during the same evening first of Action and then of One breath left; projection of the documentary film A film documentation of ACTION, followed by a public meeting/discussion. Singapore – During the “Singapore Arts Festival 2001”, presentations of One breath left, Sculpture Square Church; projection of the documentary film A film documentation of ACTION, followed by a meeting/discussion.

Jul 2001: Athens, Greece – Releasing the publication of the Greek translation of the book The Edge-Point of Performance by Thomas Richards.

Jul 2001: Vienna, Austria – Presentations of One breath left at the “Theater des Augenblicks”, followed by a public round-table between Thomas Richards, Mario Biagini, Ulf Birbaumer and Michael Huettler of Vienna University. Wroclaw, Poland – Presentations of One breath left at the “Osrodek Badan Tworczosci Jerzego Grotowskiego i Poszukiwan Teatralno-Kulturowych”, followed by a public meeting held by Thomas Richards and Mario Biagini. Pontedera, Italy – In the frame of a prolonged meeting in work (1 week) between the Workcenter and a group of students from Fordham University, New York, presentations of Action and One breath left.

Oct 12-14, 2001: International Symposium, organized together with “Fondazione Pontedera Teatro” and “Associazione Grotowski”, on “Jerzy Grotowski, Past and Present of a Research – First Phases: The Teatr Laboratorium between Opole and Wroclaw 1959-1969, The Energies of the Genesis”.

Nov 2001: Brescia, Italy – Presentations of One breath left at the “ Teatro Odeon di Lumezzane ”, followed by a public meeting held by Mario Biagini at the Università Cattolica di Brescia; Milano, Italy – One breath left is awarded the Ubu Special Prize “for the development of the research”.

Dec 2001: Italy – Presentations of Action at the Workcenter, and of One breath left at the Fondazione Pontedera Teatro.

Jan 2002: Pontedera, Italy – Meeting with English and American theatre professionals and scholars, presentations of Action and One breath left, followed by analyzes and discussion.

Feb 2002: Bologna, Italy – Presentations of One breath left, at the “Casa delle culture e dei Teatri”; Modena, Italy – Presentations of One breath left, at the Emilia Romagna Teatro, ERT; Ferrara, Italy – Presentations of One breath left, at the Teatro Comunale di Ferrara.

Mar 2002: Ankara, Turkey – Presentations of One breath left at the Ankara National Theatre. Istanbul, Turkey – Presentations of One breath left, at the ENKA Auditorium, followed by a public meeting led by Thomas Richards and Mario Biagini at the 5 Sokak Theatre.

Apr 2002: Matera, Italy – Presentations of One breath left, in the Church of San Pietro Barisano, Matera, a project hosted by “Teatro dei Sassi”, followed by a public meeting led by Thomas Richards and Mario Biagini at the Università degli Studi di Matera.

May-Jun 2002: Matera, Italy – Presentations of Action, in the Church of San Pietro Barisano, Matera, a project hosted by “Teatro dei Sassi”. Open projections, in Palazzo Lanfranchi, Matera, of the film Art as Vehicle by Mercedes Gregory (1989), and of A film documentation of ACTION (2000), followed by a dialogue with the audience.

Nov 2002: Vienna, Austria – Presentations of Action in Maria Hilfer Kirche and of a new version of One breath left in the locals of “Theater des Augenblicks”. Open projection, in the locals of “Theater des Augenlicks”, of the film Art as Vehicle by Mercedes Gregory (1989), followed by a dialogue with the audience. Pontedera, Italy – Conducting a workshop organized by AFDAS with French professional actors;

Dec 2002: Palermo, Italy – Presentations of One breath left in the locals of the Teatro Libero di Palermo. Moscow, Russia – Presentations of Action in the “Grot Hall” of Anatoly Vassiliev’s Moscow Theatre “School of Dramatic Art”, of One breath left in the “Manège Hall” of the same building and of The Twin: an Action in creation in the “Tau Hall” of the same building.

From April 2003 to April 2006, the project “Tracing Roads Across” outlines a vision that will house the ongoing creative development of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards. During the three years of “Tracing Roads Across”, the Workcenter will be active in Italy, Austria, Greece, France, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Russia, Turkey, Tunisia, Poland and the UK.
