The Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski was founded in 1986 at the invitation of the Centro per la Sperimentazione e la Ricerca Teatrale of Pontedera, Italy (now: Fondazione Pontedera Teatro), its director Roberto Bacci and Carla Pollastrelli.
In 1996 Jerzy Grotowski decided that the name of the Workcenter changes into: Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards, because, as he specified, the direction of the practical work already concentrated itself in the hands of Thomas Richards.
Between these two dates, Jerzy Grotowski realized with Thomas Richards the process of transmission in the ancient, traditional sense of the word.
After the death of Mr. Grotowski in 1999, the direction of the Workcenter, and its artistic drive toward the future has been in the hands of Mr. Richards, heir of Jerzy Grotowski’s research, who is deepening and developing the research and the Workcenter's creative exploration.

The team of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards is made up of its Artistic Director, Thomas Richards, Associate Director, Mario Biagini, an artistic core group – Workcenter researchers who have all already taken active part in the performative researches for at least five full years, and stagiaires, who are the artists who have presently taken part in the performative research for at least two and a half years. The Workcenter has begun in April of 2005 its New Stagiaires Project, made up of participants, selected from among numerous candidates, who will work alongside the Workcenter research in a full time preparatory period lasting a minimum of one year.

The Workcenter team is: Gey Pin Ang, Souphiène Amiar, Cécile Berthe, Mario Biagini, Marie De Clerck, Francesc Torrent Gironella, Elisa Poggelli, Johanna Porkola, Thomas Richards, Pei Hwee Tan, Jørn Riegels Wimpel.

About the research
The daily research at the Workcenter takes place in an intense schedule; six days a week, normally eight to ten hours a day.

From April 2003 to April 2006, both the internal and external activities of the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards articulate themselves through Tracing Roads Across: a three-year project supported by the Culture 2000 Programme of the European Union, and by a network of cultural operators from six different countries.

Throughout Tracing Roads Across the Workcenter will develop its presence along the following lines that reflects its ongoing impulse toward the future (see the links on Art as vehicle and on Project The Bridge: Developing Theatre Arts).
