Created in 1988 on the initiative of researchers and professionals of the publishing world, the Institut Mémoires de l'édition contemporaine (IMEC) gathers together funds of archives and studies dedicated to the main publishing houses, reviews and to the different protagonists in the life of books and writings of the XX century: editors, writers, historians, philosophers, critics, translators, graphists, booksellers, printers, review makers, journalists, literary directors …

A living memory of book, of edition and of creation, this patrimony, till now inaccessible and widely unpublished, contributes to the development of scientific researches on contemporary, intellectual, artistic and literary life, on its creators and its mediators, on its networks and its institutions.

These funds as a whole constitute today the very first private collection of literary and editorial French contemporary archives.

The policy of constituting the funds of the Institut is based on one hand on the will to enrich the researches in the domain of the history of books and publishing, and on the other on literary and intellectual creation. This direction justifies the entirety of the orientations given to the organization of the collections and to the policy of valorizing the funds conserved at IMEC.
